Security, Human Rights and Critical Minerals

Project presentation

Mining of critical minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) presents great promise for economic and social development in a country with chronic instability and weak governance. The project aims to improve the human rights and security of communities living around mining sites in the DRC through dialogue with government and private sector actors. Joint identification and implementation of solutions can lead to strengthened security sector governance. The project has assisted the Congolese government become an engaged member in the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights Initiative, ensuring the DRC engages directly with consuming countries to address security and human rights challenges. The project is the first to engage Chinese companies directly on security and human rights. DCAF is replicating the approach in Mozambique, Peru, and elsewhere.

Organization presentation

DCAF – Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance is dedicated to improving the security of states and their people within a framework of democratic governance, the rule of law, respect for human rights, and gender equality. The project is presented in collaboration with Congolese civil society organizations implementing partners Open Government Partnership (OGP) and Justicia.
