WHO is developing a model for regional implementation of a global governance framework for human genome editing (HGE).
A regional approach brings together diverse communities and resources to build capacity to harness the benefits of human genome editing while managing the risks. By working regionally, countries can share experience and be supported in reviewing and revising their governance arrangements.
The project responds directly to a major challenge and related recommendation of the WHO Advisory Committee on Genetic Engineering Governance, namely the barrier to equitable access to genetic engineering technologies posed by the lack of appropriate governance arrangements, in particular regulatory capacity. The Advisory Committee called for capacity building through international cooperation to overcome these obstacles and enable equitable access.
Founded in 1948, WHO is the United Nations agency that connects nations, partners and people to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable – so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health.
WHO leads global efforts to expand universal health coverage. They direct and coordinate the world’s response to health emergencies and promote healthier lives – from pregnancy care through old age.
“The Human Genome Editing Framework is a perfect example of WHO’s commitment to harnessing the power of science and technology to promote, provide and protect health around the world.”
Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO
