The project aims to assist more than 50 million Africans, mostly children, who suffer from uncommon diseases and have a higher death rate as a result of inadequate healthcare infrastructure. Given that 80% of these illnesses have a genetic basis, the suggested AI solution uses machine learning, specifically graph neural networks, to analyze enormous genomic datasets in an effort to enhance diagnosis and therapy. Reducing diagnostic delays and improving illness management in environments with limited resources is the intended outcome. Long-term goals include higher survival rates and more accessibility to precision treatment. AI researchers, healthcare organizations, and a few particular hospitals are important collaborators.
The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) is part of the AI4D Multidisciplinary Labs project by IDRC, focused on developing AI and data science talent in Ghana and the subregion. RAIL supports the digital transformation of sectors like health, agriculture, and renewable energy by fostering innovation and collaboration with SMEs and government bodies. Its mission is to address the AI skills gap and promote practical AI applications for societal challenges.
